Abstract : An outlook of expected sea-ice conditions in Baffin Bay and the Labrador Sea is presented for the period mid-May through mid-September 1962. The outlook is based on detailed relationships between environmental factors affecting ice formation, growth, drift, and disintegration. A long-range forecast of general scope is presented as well as details of ice breakup in several harbors. Oceanographic and climatic data accumulated during the past winter as well as current and prognostic meteorological parameters serve as the basis for the forecast. In addition, observed ice conditions presented in chart form for the period 23 through 29 March are used to complement and modify the results of the theoretical and empirical environmental relationships. Ice conditions are expected to be less severe than usual, especially in Goose Bay and approaches, in Sondre Stromfjord, and at Itivdleq which is already open for shipping. The Thule shipping season should commence somewhat later than normal, but Baffin Island coastal areas should experience normal ice conditions. Opening dates at Kulusuk are expected to be later than average this year. (Author)
