Abstract : A perspective of the role of focusing Cerenkov counters in high energy physics is given. The excellent time resolution and good velocity resolution of these counters are discussed with respect to present experimental methods, recent experiments, and future trends in this field. The basic principles of their operation and the limitations to their velocity resolution are considered in detail. Several designs for differential gas Cerenkov counters are given on the basis of present working models. These designs provide incident beams of identified particles up to gamma = 100 and 200 for use in experiments such as the measurement of total cross sections once the corresponding momenta become available.
