Abstract : Cd single- and bi-crystals were subjected to controlled oxidation. The best experimental conditions consisted of a temperature range of 180 to 220 C, a wet oxygen environment, and a test duration of 48 hrs. Both x-rays and ozone were very effective in increasing the surface oxidation of Cd bi-crystals. Preferential oxidation patterns relating to the reciprocal positions of the boundary and the slip directions appeared after previous plastic deformation. In the field of decoration of Cd bi-crystals by means of Cd vapor deposition, a characteristic difference in shape and size of the deposition nuclei was observed on previously oxidized and the unoxidized surfaces. Decoration mechanisms of Zn on Cd single- and bi-crystals are discussed. Results of a controlled reduction process carried out on oxide crystals, in particular, hematite, are discussed. New d vices for the electrochemical cutting of metallic crystals are discribed.
