Abstract : The electrochemistry of the HF-N2O4 and HF-NO systems and its relationship to the synthesis of oxygen-fluorine compounds is discussed. The effect of electrode passivation on polarization was found to be particularly important. The synthesis of NO3F or of OF2 in the HF-NO system has been found to depend upon electrode passivation; conditions for the synthesis of both components were established. The electrolysis of HF-N2O (NaF) was found to yield NF3 as a product. Nitric oxide was found to be slightly soluble in anhydrous HF but its solubility was increased by two orders of magnitude by the addition of N2O4. (Author)
