Abstract : AN EQUILIBRIUM ENERGY DISTRIBUTION FUNCTION INCLUDING ROTATION IS CONSIDERED FOR A DIATOMIC MOLECULAR GAS AND FOUND TO BE CONSISTENTLY CORRECT IN GENERATING CONTINUUM EQUATIONS FROM A GENERAL TRANSPORT EQUATION. THE MODEL IS USED TO EXAMINE HYPERSONIC FREE-MOLECULAR FLOWS OF A DIATOMIC GAS WHERE ALTERATIONS FROM THE EQUATIONS OF MONATOMIC FLOWS ARE FOUND IN TEMPERATURE TERMS OF THE ENERGY TRANSFER RELATION. SUCH TERMS ARE NOT NEGLIGIBLE EVEN AT ORBITAL SPEEDS AND SHOULD NOT BENEGLECTED IN ANALYSES. THE CASE OF A GAS MISTURE (CONTINUUM) IS TREATED FROM A MOLECULAR VIEWPOINT UNING A TRANSPORT RELATION FOR THE MOLECULAR MIXTURE. THE ANALYSIS DEALS WITH A DIATOMIC-MONATOMIC MIXTURE AND THEN GENERALIZES THE RESULTS TO FORMULATE SPECIFIC HEATS AND THEIR RATIO FOR ANY NONREACTING MIXTURE
