Abstract : The results of a laboratory study of the effect of surface decarburization on the yield strength and notch toughness parameters of three high strength steels: MBMC No. 1, Super Tricent and AISI 9262 are presented in graphical and tubular form. Curves of depth of surface decarburization versus yield strength and notch toughness as indicated by critical Griffith strain energy release rate for unstable crack propagation are presented for each material for nominal thickness of 0.050 in., 0.100 in. and 0.150 in. It is shown that the yield strength and notch toughness of each material is a straight line function of depth of surface decarburization in that increasing depth results in increasing notch toughness and decreasing yield strength. Limited information on the effect of surface decarburization on the stress corrosion resistance of MBMC No. 1 and Super Tricent steels as compared to that of the non-decarburized or base metal is also presented.
