Abstract : Cleanliness requirements designed to increase the reliability of lead welds for electronic components are described. Mechanical cleaning of component leads (i.e., Ni or Dumet wire and Ni ribbon) prior to welding resulted in welds superior to those attempted on uncleaned material. Mechanical cleaning was performed manually by means of a proprietary abrasive material consisting of Alundum deposited on nylon filaments. A method of determining lead material contamination by fluorescent analysis is described. The lead is exposed to an oil soluble fluorescent dye and is then examined in ultraviolet light. Intensity of fluorescence indicates the extent of oil and/or grease contamination. (Author)
