Abstract : The molecular beam system for sampling 1 atm. sources has been modified by providing a much greater pumping speed in the first stage and by replacing the blunt second orifice with a sharp-edged conical 'skimmer.' The preliminary results with this system show that ordered flow of gas occurs from the first orifice through the second orifice and into a molecular beam. At 40 Torr source pressure the beam intensity is such that one part in 50,000 can be detected. Results are presented and discussed on: (1) scattering in the various stages; and (2) on the relative contribution to the total ion intensity from background gas, from the direct molecular beam and from the scattered gas from the beam after wall collisions in the ion source.
