Abstract : Symmetrical and unsymmetrical triarylphosphine oxides and sulfides have been prepared using, in general, a Grignard Reaction. Thermal testing at 450 - 500 C (842 - 932 F) in sealed tubes has been carried out to measure the hydrocarbon(s) formed by thermal decomposition. The oxides are shown to be considerably more stable than the sulfides. The more stable compounds tested contain phenoxy or fluoro groups in a para position. Certain heterocyclic systems, based on dibenzophosphole and phenoxaphosphine, show exceptionally good thermal stability, exhibiting less than 0.2%/hour decomposition at 500 C (932 F). Some conclusions as to decomposition mechanism and effect of ring substitution are advanced. (Author)
