Abstract : The feasibility of a high temperature resistant transparent plastic laminate utilizing a castable interlayer is demonstrated for high performance aircraft. To protect against aerodynamic heating at speeds much in excess of Mach 2, the laminate incorporates an inboard load-carrying or structural face sheet of stretched MIL-P-8184 acrylic which is shielded from thermal degradation by an outboard, nonload-bearing high temperature resistant thermal barrier or insulating face sheet. The two face sheets are laminated together to form one integral composite glazing material with a tough and flexible castable interlayer. Laminating grade as-cast MIL-P-8184 acrylic was selected as the outboard thermal barrier face sheet in a Thermo-Shield laminate. Thermal barrier materials which were investigated in addition to the as-cast Plex 55 include Sierracin 880, Sierracin 890, Selectron 400, Polymer K, epoxy, and soda-line plate glass. (Author)
