Abstract : Engineering test and evaluation are made of the Integrated Mapping System, a system for the semiautomatic compilation of maps. Tests were conducted to determine operational characteristics of the system, to investigate resolution and positioning accuracy which might be expected from use of television reimaging to secure planimetric detail, to investigate possible advantages of securing hypsometry through use of dropped lines, and to determine advantages of provision of electronic memory-assistance to the operator during profiling. The report concludes: (a) The Integrated Mapping System is not suitable for use in production-line compilation of maps; (b) resolution and positioning of planimetric detail produced by television reimaging are sufficient for production of orthophotomaps; (c) value of furnishing electronic memory-assistance to an operator is marginal; (d) when implemented by a satisfactory line-drop device the line-drop technique produces satisfactory results; (e) mechanical line-drop control devices are unsatisfactory; (f) individuals experienced in use of conventional compilation equipment can operate the system; and (g) an electronic technician will be needed for periodic maintenance of the system.
