Abstract : The formulation presented explicitly takes into account the possibility that he process quality ay deteriorate to an undesirable level. It uses certain a priori information about the relative likelihood of the po sible patterns of process quality over time. The resulting continuous sampling scheme is designed to approximate the procedure which would minimize he total expected cost an imputed cost, including the expected cost of insp ction, the expected cost and imputed cost of clearing defective items for use, and the exp cted cost and imput d cost of investigating and adjusting the process to improve the process u lity. Determinations are made as to when the process should b adjusted if no inspections are permitted to supplement t e a priori infor ation and w en t additional inform tion on the process quality level to be obtain from inspection justifies the additional cost of inspection. The conti uous sa pling plan arising out of the analysis i summarized a d he resulting operating charact ristics are illustrated. (Author)
