Abstract : The thermoelectric power of NaCl was measured as a function of temperature between 550 C and the melting point, using Pt metal electrodes. Measurements were made on pure material, and on material doped with 0.1% CdCl2. Compared with the theory of Howard and Lidiard, the results yield a value of the order of -1 eV for the sum of the cation and anion vacancy heats of transport, although the accuracy is low because of reactions occurring at the electrodes and uncertainties in the ratio of defect mobilities.
