Abstract : A total of 8521 articles in 36 volumes of the Physical Review yielded 137,108 references to 805 sources. Some statistical properties of the list are discussed. Three classes of periodic literature in science are defined from the statistics: (a) the definitive journal; (b) a closed list of widely used journals; (c) an open list of rarely used journals. The hypothesis is of the difference in function that will have to be considered in the design of a realistic science communication system. (Author)
