Abstract : The feasibility was studied of measuring free air temperature radiometrically from supersonic aircraft. The investigation, which included the construction and testing of a breadboard model, uncovered many problem areas which included the collecting optics, the detector spectral selectivity, and temperature control of the reference source. A 15 micron sensitive free air thermometer was subjected to ground testing to establish techniques needed for the design of a model radiometer for supersonic flight.
