Abstract : Efforts are being made to establish a set of guide-lines for determining the optimum number and spacing of the elements of quasi-random and pseudo-random arrays whereby the elements can be spaced significantly greater than a half-wavelength apart, on the average, and yet retain main beam performance and acceptable side lobe levels. The results of the investigation are to beAPPLICABLE AS A THINNING-OUT TECHNIQUE FOR A LARGE CONVENTIONAL PLANAR ARRAY WITH BETWEEN 10,000 AND 50,000 ELEMENTS. The degree of thinning-out varies from 30% to 90%. The antenna parameters that are to be considered in thinning-out are sidelobe enhancement, beamwidth, second order beam suppression, gain, and scanning capability. (Author)
