Abstract : One additional solid round extrusion of as-cast W-3Mo alloy was partially accomplished from 3200 F at a reduction ratio of about 16.4:1 and only 88% of liner capacity. Billet temperature of about 3200 F was established as the starting temperature for the extrusion of 'T' shapes at a reduction ratio of about 17:1. 'T' shape extrusions of cast W-3Mo alloy were accomplished from 3100 to 3200 F at a reduction ratio of about 18:1. These extrusions were made to study die glass composition and associated hardening point. Good dimensional run-out and light glass rub-in resulted from the use of soft rather than hard die glass. Good extrusion results were obtained with an extrusion die having a basic included entry angle of 130 degrees, 1/4-in. constant land, minimum entry radius of 3/16-in. to a maximum entry radius of 5/16-in., a surface hardness of Rockwell C 48 to 50 and protected by 0.030 to 0.040-in. thick coating of ZrO2 applied by the oxyacetylene flame-spray process with solidrod feed. Die surfaces roughened to at least 500 rms appeared essential for sufficient bond strength with the ZrO2 coating. (Author)
