Abstract : The NRL drop-weight test was developed in 1952 and has been used extensively to investigate the factors which determine the conditions required for the initiation of brittle fractures in structural steels. Drop-weight test facilities have now been established at several Navy activities and numerous research institutions and industrial organizations in this country and abroad. In addition, the test method is used for specification purposes by some industrial organizations furnishing materials for critical naval applications. To insure that tests conducted at different (or new) locations will have a common meaning, it has become necessary to prepare a standard procedure. The details given herein are recommended for consideration by cognizant BuShips Codes for specification as a NavShips standard for drop-weight tests of ferritic steels. (Author)
