Abstract : The primary purpose of this program is to conduct detailed studies of the properties and processing of Ta rich alloys in the Ta-W-Hf system. An initial portion of the program will consist of establishing base line properties on the Ta-8W-2Hf alloy. Physical and mechanical properties will be evaluated on the basis of: (1) Tensile properties (-452 to 3500F); (2) Stress rupture properties (1 to 10 hrs at 2400 and 3000F); (3) Recrystallization; (4) Thermal expansio ; (5) Hot hardness; (6) Weldability. Melting and processing of 3-inch diameter alloy ingots to sheet is described in detail. Preliminary elevated and low temperature mechanical properties are given.
