Abstract : Certain simple explicit finite difference approximations to the solution of the initial value problem are considered for a uniformly parabolic system of linear differential equations with variable coefficients. The problem is to determine conditions which will guarantee that the approximating difference problem is well-posed. Since explicit difference equations involving a finite number of lattice points are used, the existence of a unique solution of the difference problem is trivial. Primarily, the concern is with the dependence of the solution of the difference problem on its data. (Author)
