Abstract : A mechanism is postulated for the recombination of electrons and ions in a high-temperature argon plasma. This mechanism, togetheations are presented which show that, if the postulated mechanism is correct, the actual flow will differ considera ly from both equilibrium and frozen-flow limits for a wide range of conditions. It is also predicted that the recombination mechanism will lead to an electron temperature considerably in excess of the temperature o with the quasione-dimensional flow equations, is used to study the flow of ionised argon through a supersonic wind tunnel nozzle. Results of numerical computations are presented which show that, if the postulated mechanism is correct, the actual flow will differ considera ly from both equilibrium and frozen-flow limits for a wide range of conditions. It is also predicted that the recombination mechanism will lead to an electron temperature considerably in excess of the temperature of the atoms and ions. (Author)
