Abstract : Measurements of resonance atomic absorption in the extreme ultraviolet by nitrogen afterglows are used to obtain oscillator strengths for transitions in nitrogen. These quantities are not obtainable by exact calculation and are determined experimentally here for the first time. Also, the resonance absorption technique, now established on a quantitative basis, is employed to study the persistence of ground state and metastable atoms in a normal nitrogen afterglow and in the so-called pink nitrogen afterglow.
