Abstract : A cyclotron in which the particle trajectories are controlled by the high-frequency field of a traveling electromagnetic wave has certain advantages over ordinary cyclotrons. The most important of these advantages are: (1) the absence of a magnet, which is the most expensive part of a cyclotron, (2) the possibility of increasing the repetition rate to several kilocycles with the resultant possibility of increasing the average radiation intensity, and (3) the possibility of obtaining at the output of the cyclotron particles with an energy spread considerably smaller than that of linear accelerators.
