Abstract : A nonlinear differential equation was derived which describes the behavior of electromagnetic radiation in a laser for short periods of time, one relaxation of the crystal. This equation was derived by using Maxwell's equation for a wave and quantum mechanics to determine the current density. It is shown that the wave does not grow uniformly throughout the crystal for relatively large values of time. Also it is shown that growth of the E(t) term is inversely proportional to the three-halves power of the frequency and inversely proportional to the square root of the lifetime of the atomic state.
