Abstract : Investigations of the electrophysiological properties of the mammalian motor end-plate reveal: (1) Prolonged or intermittent application of acetylcholine desensitizes the chemoreceptors of the motor end-plate. (2) The motor nerve controls the size of the chemosensitive surface in muscle fiber, presumably through the release of a chemical mediator. (3) The chemical sensitivity of end-plate receptors in muscles from patients with myasthenia gravis is normal, suggesting that the neuromuscular defect in this disease is of pre-junctional origin.
