Abstract : The equations and the two principal techniques used to produce selfconsistent model atmospheres are reviewed. One technique consists of defining the model in terms of the atmospheric properties at ground level (or some other base level) and the molecularscale temperature at higher altitudes in the form of linear segments. The second consists of specifying a density curve and calculating a molecularscale temperature curve in terms of the molecularscale temperature at some reference level and the density values. The specific equations and boundary conditions used to develop the present model are given. This is followed by the defining properties of the proposed standard and a short table of the principal atmospheric properties between 90 and 700 km. The mean molecular weight used in the standard is described, including a brief discussion of the method of calculation of the density of each of the nine major constituents used to calculate the mean weight.
