Abstract : Methods for analyzing the desirability of a multi-purpose system over a single-purpose system are presented. These methods allow an analyst to evaluate the tactical flexibility which may be obtained with the multi-purpose weapons. Payoff functions, models for effectiveness and costs are presented. The principal example used--is the multi-purpose missile to be used for air-to-air and air-to-ground combat in limited war. Principles of the method are abstracted and are applied to a multi-purpose tactical aircraft. (Author)
