Abstract : IMPROVEMENTS IN THE TRANSIENT THERMAL DIFFUSIVITY DEVICE ARE DESCRIBED WHICH PERMITTED REPRODUCIBLE AND ACCURATE MEASUREMENTS TO BE MADE FROM 1300 TO 1650 C. Data over this temperature range are presented on tantalum, titanium carbide, and zirconium carbide. The steady-state thermal conductivity apparatus was used to measure the thermal conductivity of zirconium carbide from 500 to 2100 C, and of one specimen of titanium nitride from 550 to 1200 C. The thermal conductivity behavior of zirconium carbide is similar to that previously observed for titanium carbide. The data for titanium nitride are in marked contrast to values reported in the literature. Progress in specific heat and electrical resistivity measurements are also described. (Author)
