Abstract : The interaction between transverse electron beam waves in periodic fields is usually analyzed by assuming a sinusoidal variation of the electric and magnetic fields. In this analysis another approach is used, assuming the fields to consist of functions. Exact solutions can then be obtained by standard mathematical methods. The interaction in quadrupole fields, two-dimensional fields, and fields of rotational symmetry is considered, and the results are shown to agree well with the sinusoidal-field theory. Extensive numerical calculations are presented. (Author)
