Abstract : Recent advances in surgery have enhanced the need for providing biologically receptive polymeric surgical repair materials which can be utilized in replacing or repairing damaged and diseased tissues and organs. The i portant parameters, porosity and molecular structure, which appear to be relevant to the biological receptivity of such materials, are discussed and materials design criteria evolved. Based upon these criteria, vulcanizable terpolymers of the acrylic and methacrylic acid esters and methacrylamide were selected as a class of materials for further investigation. The terpolymers were synthesized, their properties elucidated, and procedures for applying these materials for fabricating artificial arteries and hip prostheses were developed. (Author)
