Abstract : Research is being conducted to prepare and optimize semiconductor materials for electron injection laser applications. Our approach is based primarily on investigation of III-V and II-VI compounds with rare earth activators. The major problem of this program is to find a material with maximum quantum efficiency, low resistivity, and good optical qualities, with radiative properties associated with a good laser material. The immediate effort utilizes well established experimental techniques to determine the necessary parameters such as recombination mechanisms, quantum efficiencies, transition probabilities, etc. The experiments will include the following measurements: free carrier densities; optical absorption, excitation, and fluorescence spectra; thermal and optical quenching of photo conductivity and luminescence. Various host crystals and activators will be studied while varying the parameters to maximize quantum efficiency. (Author)
