Abstract : Results obtained on explosive forming tests to produce 36-in. diameter hemispherical domes in mild steel and high strength steel are summarized. The results indicate that: (1) The freeforming die may be used successfully to form domes with a configuration less than a hemisphere; (2) The use of an ice die produced dome contours within 0.180-in. of desired contour; (3) Welded mild steel and high strength steel blanks may be explosively formed to a hemispherical configuration without detriment to the weld or parent material; and (4) Control on n al blank thickness to compensate for t inning and thickening which normally occur during the forming process permitted forming domes to a thickness f 0.154 in. ! .002-in. A description of a full-scale 120-in. diameter free-forming and ice designed to produce hemispherical domes is presented. (Author)
