Abstract : An evaluation of 3 sheets of HK31 Mg alloy cold formed by the Anderson process showed large variations in the tensile and compressive yield strength between the longitudinal and transverse directions. Control tests of as-received sheet did not show these large variations. The most prominent effect of the Anderson process on the mechanical properties was in the longitudinal direction. There were reductions of up to 47% in the tensile yield strength and 30% in the compressive yield strength. Decreases of this magnitude were present on all 3 sheets and in both the slightly and appreciably worked areas. The only properties which showed increases were the ultimate tensile and compressive yield strengths in the transverse direction. These increases varied in the 3 sheets. Cracking was observed to some degree on all sheets. This cracking is the result of excessive cold work acting on stress risers consisting of inclusions and scratches. (Author)
