Abstract : Dielectric films based on ultra-fine powders of high purity ferroelectric materials, of potential application in miniature capacitors are investigated. The program entails the preparation of homogeneously sized powders of titanate and niobate ferroelectrics in the range of 2 to 0.01 microns or less; physical and chemical characterization of the particles; and densification of the particles into bulk ceras and thin films which promise to exceed the following specifications: capacity of 2 microfarads/sq in, dielectric strengths of 90 v, capacitance stab lity of ! 20% from -40 to +120 C, insulation resistance of 500 megohm microfarads at room temperature, and dissipation factor of 0.015 at 1 Kc. The application of super-energy ball milling as a size reduction technique was promising. A rapid and direct electron microscope method was evolved to facilitate the examination of deflocculated particle shapes and sizes. (Author)
