Abstract : The wave equation describing electromagnetic wave propagation in the troposphere is olved for the one-dimensional medium which has permittivity variations represented in complex-exponential and sinusoidal forms. Form solutions are derived; proper identification of characteristic parameters with the equation being solved permits selection of appropriate solution in terms of Bessel functions or associated Mathieu functions. The wave equation describing electromagnetic wave propagation in the ionosphere is derived for an electron densi y function that varies only with height. The wave equations are shown to be of the form solved in the tropospheric wave propagation investigations. The remaining equations are shown to have forms considerably more difficult to solve than those solved under tropospheric wave propagations. A review is made of the manufacturer's recommendations for correcting geodetic distance data obtained with the Tellurometer and Geodimeter. The corrections are those due to refractive index of the atmosphere. The effect of decay of refractive index with height on angular deviations of a light ray is worked out for a simple atmospheric model. (Author)
