Abstract : Electron decay rates in the afterglow of a microwave discharge in iodine vapor are studied. Electron attachment is shown to be the dominant electron loss process, and the measured attachment cross section is found to be Sa = 1.9 x 10 to the -16th power sq cm is not sufficient to produce a easurable amount of photodetachment, which permits an upper limit of Sd < 4 x 10 to the -17th power sq cm to be established for the photodetachment cross section.
