Abstract : An analytical procedure is developed for predicting free-field ground motions and stresses for use in the design of underground protective structures. Analytic expressions in integral form are obtained for the solutions to the problems of an elastic half-sp ce and a viscoelastic half-space, each under an axisymmetric time-dependent normal loading possessing the essential features of a nuclear burst. A computer code for the evaluation of these expressions is developed through the use of FourierLegendre series and other special analytical techniques. Graphs are presented for one case of the elastic problem. (Author)
