Abstract : The primary purpose was to develop a dry adhesive with long storage life that could be readily dispersed in cold water in the field and used to bond the kraft facing paper to paper honeycomb core on field equipment. Ramalin G, an amylopectin starch, is the most satisfactorily dry facing adhesive evaluated in this program. A 26-percent solids solution of Ramalin has all of the desired characteristics except that it does not meet the 15-minute drying time requirement. The drying time of the Ramalin formulation is about 25 minutes. Other starches were obtained too late in the program for full evaluation, but they appear to be nearly equivalent to Ramalin. Facing adhesive specifications should be modified to require some degree of initial tack to assure intimate contact between the honeycomb core and facing sheet during drying. There should also be a requirement for some degree of water resistance in the facing bond. For proper application on the field glue spreader, the facing adhesive formulation should have some degree of thixotropy and a viscosity that remains in the range of 3000 to 11,000 cps over the operating temperature range of 50 to 100 F.
