Abstract : I ENTIFIERS: M OLECULAR SIEVES. The feasibility of pumping hydrogen a d helium gas by adsorption at temperatures near 20 K was i ve ig ed. HE OBJECTIVE WA O ETERMINE THE POTE IAL APPLICATION OF THIS TECHNIQUE TO LARGE SP CE IMULATION CHAMBERS. The adsorptive capacity of 8 selected adsorbents for AND He was determined und r quilibrium conditions at temp ratures b tw n 20 and 40 K and a pressures from 3 x 10 to the -8th power to 1 x 10 to the -3rd pow r torr. Cryosorption pumping under constant H gas leak was demonstrated for the three adsorbents studied: Molecular Sieves 13X nd Pd-lo ed MONIUM Y, and coconut charcoal. he cryosorption of H gas on h orb n refrigerat d with liquid H was examined. Measur ments of pumping speed showed that the adsorbents pumped at least 99.9% of the gas admitted to the cryosorption pump. Only the adsorbent surface directly exposed to the gas flow was effective. T HE C PACI Y FFICI CY OF THIS EFFECTIVE SURFACE WERE STRONGLY EPENDENT ON ITS TEMPERATURE (Author)
