Abstract : The study of heat transfer in the case of bodies flushed by an expanded gas is studied. The recovery f ctors and heat transfer coefficients for a cylinder 9positioned across a stream) over a wide range of Reynolds numbers were measured in order to bring out the laws governing the changes in these quantities in all flow regions ranging from free-molecule to continuum (the flow of a continuous medium). In this case, greatest attention was devoted to the investigation of the recovery factor because of its particular significance for problems of thermometry as well as the Nusselt-number function. It was for this reason that tungsten wires of various diameters were subjected to testing in a wind tunnel of variable density; the region under investigation encompassed the following Mach-, Reynolds-, and Knudsen-number ranges.
