Abstract : IN Part I, a system of equations, which governs the stresses and the small deformation of an orthotropic, circular cylindrical, homogeneous shell under arbitrary load and support conditions, is developed. This system consists of two-dimensional shell equations an boundary conditions deduced, by means of Reissner's variational theorem, from consistent stress and displacement assumptions which include nonvanishing transverse normal stress and she r d formations. In Part II, the equations developed in Part I are incorporated in the formulation of the field equations and associated boundary conditions for the static analysis of thick, circular cylindrical, sandwich shells with orthotropic cores. These equations comprise five equilibrium equations in terms of stress resultants, sixteen stress resultant-displacement equations, and six equations that d cribe the force int raction of the orthotropic core wi h an orthotropic inner face layer and an isotropic outer face layer. Thus, in their most general form, these equations describe the stresses and deformations of a three layered, circular cylindrical shell. (Aut or)
