Abstract : The tube method was used to measure sound absorption and velocity in pure O2 at 23.5, 208.7 and 301.3 C. At the elevated temperatures the absorption was in excess of the cl ssical value. This was attributed to thermal relaxation of the vibratio al en rgy. At 208.7 and 301.3 C, the peak value of the relaxation absorption curve is estimated to fall at 1 !4 and 175!13 cycl s/ ec/atm, r spectively. These values correspond to relaxation times of 1.71 x 10 to the -3rd power and 1.01 x 10 to the -3rd power sec and are considerably longer than would be e pected by interpolation from previous data at higher and lower temperatures.
