Abstract : A study of the wheel-load supporting capacity of processed snow runways was conducted. Static load tests were made on processed snow in test bins to determine the extent of disturbance by a surface load and type of failure produced. Test sections of processed snow runways were trafficked with an aircraft tire using wheel loads up to 35,000 lb. Ram hardness, unconfined compression, and California Bearing Ratio field tests were also performed, and results of the tests were compared. It was found that it will be possible to predict the supporting capacity of snow pavements from the results of simple tests, especially the ram hardness tests. (Author)
