Abstract : IN A STUDY OF 299 NAVAL RECRUITS, CLOSE RELATIONSHIPS WERE FOUND BETWEEN THE LEVEL OF PERIODONTAL DISEASE AND THE NUMBER OF FILLED TEETH, THE NUMBER OF DECAYED TEETH, THE HYGIENE INDEX AND THE NUMBER OF TIMES PER DAY THAT THE TEETH WERE BRUSHED. Significant differences were found between high school graduates and nongraduates in regard to factors indicating the level of home and professional dental care. It is concluded that a high level of personal and professional dental care is closely related to reduced periodontal disease in a recruit population. (Author)
