Abstract : A study of the design, development and fabrication details of a transmitter for a microwave refractometer is presented. The basic components of the transmitter are as follows: self-contained power source, power converter, sawtooth voltage generator, klystron oscillator, resonant cavity, antenna and reflector. A dc-to-dc power converter is employed to furnish the required high voltages for the klystron oscillator and the sawtooth voltage generator. Generation of a carrier in the X-band is accomplshed with the klystron oscillator and is frequency modulated by application of the sawtooth voltage to the repeller of the klystron. The resonant cavity produces the desired amplitude modulation of the frequency modulated signal. Information relating to the resonant frequency of the cavity is contained in the peak of the envelope of this special AM-FM signal. Suitable demodulation results in an indication of the index of refraction. (Author)
