Abstract : This report includes: RANGE OF 2- TO 60-KEV RECOIL ATOMS IN Cu, Ag AND Au, by V. A. J. van Lint, R. A. Schmitt and C. S. Suffredini. 13 Oct 60. (Reprint from the Physcal Review 121:1457-1463, March 1, 1961) The range-energy relation for atoms with energies between 5 and 500 kev moving in solids was studied experimentally and theoretcally. Recoil atoms were produced as products of photonuclear reactions receiving momentum primarily from the emitted particle (neutron, proton or alpha). The average energy of the recoil atom was evaluated from the energy dependence of the photon absorption cross section and the known energy spectrum of the eitted particles. The range was calculated by measuring the fraction of the recoil atoms escaping from a target foil and stopped by a nearby luminum catcher foil. the photonuclear reactions resulted in radioacive recoil atoms capable of being detected by standard radiochemical techniques. Theoretical calculations indicate that at the impact parameters which are ignifcant for the rangeenergy problem, the screening radius in an exponenially-screened Coulomb potential should be approximately twice the chracteristic length of a Fermi-Thomas atom.
