Abstract : Effects of flexural stresses on the vibration of quartz piezoids were studied. Two methods of mounting were used: (a) a cantilever, and (b) a dual support arrangement. The effect of the cantilever clamping at various azimuthal angles was studied, and a sinusoidal shaped curve seemed to result. Deflection and curvature values for a given load were plotted and compared with those expected from the application of fiber theory. The fiber treatment is evidently not a sufficiently good approximation for this case. A method of getting at the effects of atomic displacements is implied. Perturbation methods were employed in an analysis of the effects of flexural stress on vibrations, with a promising degree of success. (Author)
