Abstract : A colored image resulting from the combination of ferric ion with catechol or a catechol derivative can be achieved in a variety of ways. Photoproduced ferrous may be reoxidized to ferric by means of ambient oxygen or an organic hydroperoxide. If a catechol type compound has been introduced into the system, a green-black image results. Alternatively photoproduced ferrous ion can be allowed to interact with hydrogen peroxide contained in a processing solution or in the coated layer. If a phenolic compound is present, it will undergo hydroxylation to a catechol and form a colored image with ferric ion. Minimum stain in the unexposed areas along with shorter required exposures are achieved when the phenolic compound to be hydroxylted forms the anion of the organic acid with which the ferric ion is complexed. Ferric ammonium citrate-hydrogen peroxide-monomer coatings are dark table for at least two months under refigeration. A photopolymerization system based on autoxidation is described and has been shown to be feasible when substituted acetone phenylhydrazones are used as the autoxidizable substrate. (Author)
