Abstract : Various sulfates, phosphates and other oxygenatedANIONS AND OXIDES OF Groups III A to VI A elements have been shown to be effective depolarizers for thermal batteries at temperatures above 500 C. Polarization curves, chronopotentiometric studies and diffusion measurements used to elcidate the mechanism of the electrode reactions indicate that in the case of sulfates, the pyrosulfate ion is the active species at the cathode and that S is a probable endproduct of reduction. In the case of phosphates a complex ixture exists at the cathode which is reduced by one or more steps to P. Large numbers of cell discharge tests were run which confirmed the large energy densty potentially available in cells depolarized by these materials. (Author)
