Investigation verified the concept that the effect of turbulence on flames is only to wrinkle and extend the surface of the flame front. Flash-tube photographs show the instantaneous flame front to be a thin wrinkled continuous boundary between unburned and burned gases. All experimental measurements and the propagation of wrinkles in the high-speed motion picture substantiate this. Results definitely indicate that the ratio of local turbulent flame velocity to the laminar flame velocity, can be correlated with a dimensionless time parameter, and the dimensionless turbulence intensity in the approach flow. A useful technique was developed and verified for determination for a turbulent flame of the mean flow field in the neighborhood of the flame, the mean flame front, the rootmean-square displacement of the mean flame front, the local turbulent flame velocity, and the position of the instantaneous flame front. A technique was developed for following the formation and growth of wrinkles in the instantaneous flame front. (Author)
